Canon PIXMA MP490 Inkjet Photo All-In-One Printer (3745B002) CustomerReview
Everyone looks for something a little bit different in a printer: some want great looking prints, some want cheap operating costs, some want speed…this printer falls somewhere in the high middle on all of those, and doesn’t cost much at all.
I liked the 2 cartridge ink – I don’t (ever?) intend on buying 5 or 7 (!) separate ink cartridges, that’s for the professionals, if you ask me. I don’t need that much perfection in my prints, and I don’t need to spend all that money on ink. I did notice that even on the low quality “draft” setting, the prints looked really good, which means that plenty of ink was still being used. This is understandable, I guess, as Canon has a reputation of print quality to uphold. I went further into Printing Preferences, the “Main” tab, chose Print Quality – Custom, and moved it down all the way to 4, went back and chose Color/Intensity – Manual, and moved them down to Light and Low, then saved those new preferences as “InkSave-Draft”. Now I have a super-ink-saving setting which suits my cheap, er, frugal ways. Any time I need better quality prints, I just choose a higher quality setting.
Being an all-in-one printer, it does take up a bit of space on the desk, but not that much compared to some others.
Truthfully, the unit does NOT have a sturdy feel to it, try to be conscious of this when using it, especially the flimsy paper tray and the memory card door. I don’t know if they break easily, they just feel like they might.
The flip-up LCD seems a bit pointless, as this unit is not wireless and has to be next to the computer anyway…it’s not that tough to access all of your printing options right at the computer screen. But the things on the flip-up menu are kind of neat: templates for notebook paper and graph paper and calendars, photo index sheet, copy, remaining ink.
It does take about a minute for the printer to “warm up”, but once it is, printing is relatively fast. Also, it is far from being the quietest printer ever. I guess this must be a concern, since Canon includes a choice of “Quiet Mode” (which, when activated, makes all of your prints take longer). I don’t really mind the noise – it’s a little louder than my old printer, but not that bad. But I could see if a user wasn’t aware of the noise issue, they might think that something was wrong with their nice, new printer!
Even though that sounds like a handful of negatives in a row, I must say that I am very pleased with this printer. With my cheapskate inksaving “hack”, I expect this all-in-one will be scanning and printing low- to high- quality graphics for years to come, for a VERY reasonable cost.
